AS90 is a 155mm self propelled howitzer designed and manufactured by Vickers Shipbuilding and Engineering Ltd. (VSEL, now BAe Systems). I was a systems engineer in the design team responsible for the mathematical modelling and design of the recoil system. This absorbs some 300kW of kinetic energy in a few seconds. I then project managed the design of the 'desert AS90' variant which involved improvements to the engine cooling system. Design verification involved trials at Yuma proving ground in Arizona before a series of trials in a number of Middle Eastern countries.
M777 is a lightweight 155mm towed howitzer also designed by VSEL. It was a challenging design brief to create a 155mm howitzer at half the weight of contemporary howitzers at the time.
I was part of a small team of engineers that studied the feasibility of such a proposition with kinematic simulation of various geometries before selecting a preferred configuration. A prototype was subsequently designed and I was responsible for the simulation and design of the recoil mechanism.
I was Engineering Director of a Kent based company specialising in products requiring precision control and measurement of line of sight. This included laser, visible and thermal imaging technologies.
I was also involved in the design of a range of precision remote control products.
